Biography

Dr. James Miller, PE, PhD is joined by his co-founders Mark Lehto, PhD; David Clark PE PhD, and Adam M. Olshove, PE MSE. For 40 years Miller Engineering has had an in-office full-time staff of engineers, researchers, and technical writers. The span of our collective academic and experiential expertise includes the Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Agricultural, Industrial, Human Factors, Ergonomic and Safety fields of engineering. Website: www.millerengineering.com Our top 10 specialty areas include 1. WARNINGS & INSTRUCTIONS: Drs. Miller and Lehto wrote the first scholarly book addressing warnings, labels & user manuals. They are possibly the best known active experts in the area. Projects: Compliance with US and Global Standards (ANSI Z535 and ISO Standards), Inadequate Warnings Analysis, Product Recall Information and Strategies, and Health & Chemical Hazard Warnings. 2. WORKPLACE SAFETY: Dr. Miller wrote or revised the original OSHA General Industry (29CFR1910) and Construction (29CFR1926) Standards. Projects: Machine Guarding & Entanglements, Plastic Injection Molding, Cranes, Material Handling, Construction Accidents, Fork Lifts, Conveyors and chemical processing. 3. AGRICULTURAL AND FARM: We own/operate 1500 acres of ranch/farm and timber land, including a Hydroelectric Plant and Solar Farms which we designed and built. Projects: Tractor and Implement Accidents, Pesticide Application and Exposure including Drone Usage, Toxic Chemical Exposure, Animal Care and Accidents, Harvesting and Tillage Accidents, Barn Hay Storage, and Automated Crop Irrigation Systems through pivots and wheel lines. 4. HUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS: Dr. Lehto is the author of the widely used college text and reference book "Introduction to Human Factors and Ergonomics for Engineers", in its second edition. The breadth and depth of his expertise is obvious from this scholarly work. Both he and Dr. Miller have taught graduate level courses in this area along with related forensic and consulting activities for private companies. 5. VEHICLE ACCIDENTS & BATTERIES: Projects: Car, Bus, Truck, Motorcycle, Tractor Trailer, Bicycle and Boat Reconstructions. Battery fires and malfunctions of auto and personal E-Vehicles (bikes and scooters) have been popular. 6. FIRES, EXPLOSIONS AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURES: Projects: Electric Panel Circuit Fires, Water Heater and Furnace Flammable paint/Adhesive Ignitions, Chemical Pressure Vessel Releases, Agricultural Fertilizer Spontaneous Combustions, Chemical Environmental Releases/Contaminations in water and Community Air. 7. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY: Projects: Appliances & Tools, Child Furniture, Choking, Playgrounds, Swimming Pools, Exercise Equipment; Cannabis Processing Safety; Vaping Batteries and Management of Product Recalls. 8. SLIPS, TRIPS, FALLS AND PREMISE LIABILITY: Dr. Miller's publications on Coefficient of Friction and Ladder Safety maintain their timeliness. Property Projects Include: Retail Store Automatic Door Accidents, , Retail Store Display Placement, Parking Lot Curbs and Walkways, Stair/Rail Construction, Floor Maintenance, Snow Removal; Slip Resistant Material Usage, Faulty Contractor Construction. 9. CHEMICAL WARNINGS AND PROCESSING SAFETY: Dr. Miller's recent book analyzes about all the required "Chemical Warnings" common in the US including: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Hazardous Material Information System (HMIS) Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 (TSCA) DOT Vehicle Labeling (All Commercial Vehicles) Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA Federal Pesticide Control Act (FEPCA) International Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Hazard Communication System (OSHA HazCom) California Proposition 65 (Prop 65) We analyze accidents involving compliance of these standards as well as chemical manufacturing processing accidents. Besides chemical warnings we are involved in Toxic Tort Litigations (Asbestos, Lead, Benzene, Carbon Monoxide, Diacetyl). 10. GREENHOUSE VEGETABLE AND CANNABIS PRODUCTION: We have enjoyed engineering projects for indoor and urbanized growing and processing of select high value plants. Proper heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) systems are very complex and must be designed differently from residential buildings . The up to ten high decks of automated conveyor and irrigation levels require precise timing and quantities of water and corrosive fertilizers. Also, the multi levels of light frequencies are controlled by their own automated schedule per age of plants. Harvesting and processing the unique bud structures of cannabis subjects employees has led to serious hand injury from equipment hazards. JAMES M. MILLER, PE, PHD – Founder Dr. Miller is an Emeritus Engineering Professor at the University of Michigan. He has directly served in Washington originating several Federal OSHA safety regulations, and interacts regularly with CPSC regarding product safety and recalls. In addition to his publication areas available within his CV, he is active in daily decisions and operations for large agricultural production facilities in Idaho and Oregon. MARK R. LEHTO, PHD – Co-Founder Dr. Lehto is a Professor of Engineering at Purdue University. Within his human factors an ergonomics textbook listed above are special expertise areas such as knowledge engineering, warnings and instructions, structuring expert systems, accident modeling, accident statistical analysis, consumer product safety, boating safety, in-field national surveys of product usage, and product information effectiveness. ADAM M. OLSHOVE, PE, MSE – Our company engineering manager, Mr. Olshove has over 10 years of experience providing consulting services to industry and the legal profession. He holds his BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He has performed dozens of on-site investigations nationwide in relation to consumer product design , slips and falls, industrial accidents, battery fires and explosions and product failure analysis and testing in our laboratory facilities.
